Unfinished aligner care

Chapter 01 / Previous course and present understanding

The old course explains where the story paused. A current assessment addresses the situation and goals you bring today. Reading both together helps you understand a newly proposed course without treating the earlier plan as today's directions.

Original teaching examples explain a prospective care relationship. Individual assessment and directions belong to your clinician.

## Two accounts answer two different questions

Previous\-course information tells a clinician what was intended and what the person reports happened. A current assessment addresses the present situation and the goal being discussed now. Keeping those jobs separate makes the new explanation easier to understand.

An old plan can be detailed and still leave the current decision unanswered. Likewise, a present proposal does not erase the useful history. In a re\-entry conversation, the value is in connecting them while keeping the responsibility for a new clinical explanation clear.

## Alex's supplied previous\-course account

Fictional teaching example: Alex and Dr. Rowan are invented. This is not a patient story, a real clinic message or a SMILE\-FX protocol. The supplied facts illustrate how to read an explanation, not which treatment a reader should receive.

Alex began a clear\-aligner course in September 2023 with an appearance goal concerning the lower front teeth. Care stopped in February 2024 before that course was completed. Alex has the original plan summary and the last appointment note, and remembers that no later completion review took place.

Alex's present goal is to understand a possible new course aimed at a less crowded appearance of the lower front teeth, with a clear reviewing clinician and follow\-up arrangement. The account does not supply a reliable final stage number or a current assessment. Alex labels those details as unprovided instead of reconstructing them from memory.

## The separate present\-assessment explanation

In this fictional case, Dr. Rowan explains after the present assessment: Your current goal is a less crowded appearance of the lower front teeth. The previous summary tells us what the earlier course intended, but it does not tell us which course to propose for the situation assessed today. I am using today's assessment together with that present goal to plan a new aligner course and explain its intended scope to you. I am not selecting the next stage from the unfinished sequence.

The new course in this example is therefore organized around Alex's current lower\-front appearance goal and the present assessment, with Dr. Rowan responsible for its explanation and review. Alex's previous plan remains useful context, while its missing final stage number does not become a number to infer for the new course. The following chapter supplies the proposed approach.

## The finished reading: useful history, current responsibility

Alex can now retell the answer: My earlier summary describes where the previous course paused. Dr. Rowan is using the assessment of my situation today and my lower\-front appearance goal to plan and explain a new course. The question is the scope of that new plan, rather than which old stage to resume.

The September\-to\-February history still gives context, and the missing stage stays unprovided. What has changed is the basis of the decision: Alex's current goal and Dr. Rowan's present assessment now inform the newly planned course under that orthodontist's responsibility. Alex can take this connected explanation into the next chapter's proposal without reconstructing an old stage or treating possession of the old plan as today's directions.

## What SMILE\-FX adds to this conversation

SMILE\-FX's published Rescue offering supports an inquiry about an unfinished aligner course.

Published re\-evaluation offering: [SMILE\-FX Rescue offering](https://www.smile-fx.com/orthofx/rescue-fxretainers/)

Board\-certified orthodontist attendance, including follow\-ups, keeps clinical responsibility visible beyond the first discussion. Full\-service orthodontics with an aligner focus gives the present goal a place in a broader individual assessment.
